Pet Pregnancy Program

The Pet Pregnancy Program at The Bond Between provides support and care for pregnant dogs and cats, helping families navigate this important stage with confidence and compassion, while ensuring their beloved pet will be returned to them.

Through this program, expecting mothers are welcomed into safe, nurturing foster homes where they can give birth and care for their puppies or kittens with the support they need. Our team ensures that both mom and babies receive attentive care, proper nutrition, and necessary medical support during this critical time.

Once the babies are old enough, the mother is spayed and returned to her loving family, while the puppies or kittens are thoughtfully placed into adoptive homes through our adoption program.

At its core, the Pet Pregnancy Program is about supporting families, promoting the health and well-being of animals, and creating positive outcomes for both pets and the people who love them.

Ways to Support the Program

We’re looking for caring fosters to support the pregnant animals with newborn puppies or kittens. The Fosters will provide a safe, nurturing environment for pregnant dogs or cats as they prepare to give birth.  The expectant mother and her new born puppies or kittens will be placed in the Foster home until they are approximately 6–8 weeks old.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing 24/7 care and supervision for the mother and her litter

  • Assisting during the birth of the puppies or kittens if needed

  • Monitoring and charting growth and development of the babies

  • Ensuring the litter is healthy, warm, and feeding properly

  • Performing environmental enrichment and early socialization exercises

  • Keeping the space clean and sanitary, which involves frequent cleaning and laundry

  • Communicating with the rescue or shelter about health concerns or progress

This role requires fosters who are home frequently, attentive, and comfortable with intensive animal care. While it can be a lot of work, it is also incredibly rewarding to watch the puppies or kittens grow and thrive during their first weeks of life.

No experience? No problem! Our team will guide you every step of the way. Training will be provided to all Fosters on how to care for pregnant cats or dogs and their newborn litters. Fosters will learn what to expect before, during, and after birth, as well as how to support the mother and ensure healthy development of the kittens or puppies.

If you’ve ever wanted to help animals but aren’t ready for a long-term commitment, this is a beautiful way to make a difference.Interested in becoming a whelping or queening foster? please Sign up below.

Frequently asked Questions

What is the New Beginning's Pet Pregnancy Program?

Our Pet Pregnancy Program provides a safe and supportive environment for pregnant dogs and cats whose owners may not have the ability to care for the mother and her babies during pregnancy, birth, and early development.

What services are provided through the program?

We provide whelping (for dogs) and queening (for cats), daily care, monitoring during labor and delivery, and proper care for the newborn puppies or kittens until they are old enough for adoption.

Will I get my pet back?

Yes. The mother will be returned to her owner after the babies are fully weaned and she has recovered from her spay surgery. Our goal is to ensure she is healthy, recovered, and ready to return home safely.

Will I receive any updates on my pet while they are in the program?

Yes. We understand that your pet is part of your family, and we want you to feel comfortable while they are in our care. Owners will receive periodic updates on how the mother is doing during her stay, including general information about her health and the progress of the puppies or kittens. Our goal is to keep you informed and reassured while we care for your pet and her babies.

What happens to the puppies or kittens?

The puppies or kittens will be adopted out through New Beginning’s adoption program to carefully screened homes.

Why are the babies adopted out?

Our goal is to ensure that every puppy and kitten has a safe, prepared, and permanent home. The program helps prevent overcrowding and ensures the babies receive proper veterinary care and placement.

How long will my pet stay in the program?

Typically, the mother will stay with us from late pregnancy until the babies are fully weaned, which is usually around 8 weeks after birth.

Will my pet receive veterinary care?

Yes. We ensure the mother and babies receive appropriate care and monitoring. Additional veterinary care may be provided if needed.

How do I apply for the program?

Owners can complete the New Beginning’s application to determine if the program is the right fit.

How can someone adopt one of the puppies or kittens?

Interested adopters can apply through The Bond Between adoption process once the puppies or kittens are ready to find their forever homes.
